Nalerigu has several Baptist churches and our friend Issahaku (nicknamed “Deacon”) invited us to attend his church “2nd Baptist.”
The service is a nice mix of English and Mampruli. Usually the sermon is preached in English with someone translating into Mampruli. We like this because we it helps us with learning the language. We also bring our Mampruli Bible and are constantly flipping back and forth between it and the English one. As a result, listening to a sermon is not a passive act and we are exhausted after church.
This Sunday was very well attended since it was a “Thanksgiving Service.” Here a Thanksgiving service means you give “thanks” to God by “giving” to the church’s latest fundraiser. The service went quite long as they started by asking for $250 donations and worked their way down. The church is trying to raise $3500 to finish building their pastorium. We quietly left three hours in when they hit the $20 level.
