As part of my ongoing Mampruli visual dictionary project, Trey and I took a field trip to the village of Nasia on the Nasia River. The village is on the southern edge of Mamprugu, the Mamprusi Kingdom, and its chief happens to be my language tutor Jangdoo’s uncle.
Jangdoo let his uncle know of our coming and he was expecting us when we arrived. After going through the traditional chief greetings I explained a bit about my photo project. He then called his timpanist, who has been a life-long fisherman, to be our guide and take us around.
We had a great bit of luck right off the bat when we ran into a woman on her way back from the river with a bowl full of fresh fish. She had caught 11 different species and let me photograph them all and record her reciting their Mampruli names.
I photographed plants, traps, nets and other fishing related objects – coming home with nearly 30 new items for the dictionary.
