Yesterday was Eid al-Fitr, a Muslim holiday celebrating the end of Ramadan. In Nalerigu, the tradition is for all the Muslims to gather on the east side of town for prayer in the morning. It’s a big event and everyone wears their “Sunday Best.”
I went this year to observe and get some shots. My friends in the group seek me out to have their portraits made in their nice attire.
After the solemn community prayer the day turns more festive. Kids swarm the streets saying “Barka Da Sallah” to anyone and everyone, which means “Greetings on Sallah” in the Hausa language (and of course, they want a treat in return). Youth set up big speaker systems and hold dance parties in the streets which draw big crowds. Even the central mosque had a gig going on in front of it to attract the kids.
