The Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary is named after the two villages that make the monkey’s safe haven possible. Legend has it that 150 years ago a spirit told a hunter from the village not to kill the monkeys in their forest. Locals now believe that if someone harms a monkey they could suffer from a calamity.
As a result, the area’s Colobus and Mona monkeys have flourished. They have no fear of the people in the villages and will come right up to you for a treat of bananas or peanuts.
In one area of the forest, the locals have even setup a cemetery for the monkeys. It is believed that monkeys from the two villages who are about to die will always make the journey back home to the sanctuary before dying so that they can be buried there.
