This weekend I visited the Mamprusi village of Langbina about 20km from Nalerigu. Baptist Global Response recently assisted the local Baptist church to setup a mill in the community. The project was initiated by the church’s “Women’s Missionary Union” who recognized the need. Previously, women in Langbina and the neighboring village of Zorizugu were walking over 7km to get their corn ground into flour.
The church raised its own funds and built the concrete building that houses the mill. BGR then provided the $1600 for the church to purchase the mill. The church has saved the profits from the mill to establish a “repair fund.” Any additional profits are to be used for leadership development training, literacy, and village education & health care needs.
A mill like this brings women from the two villages (about 750 in total population) together daily. It is a fantastic evangelistic opportunity for the church women to share their faith while meeting the communities’ needs.
I went by the village with IMB missionary Bart Gibbs to check on the mill and how things were going. We arrived and got to see women using it just as it was intended. They also showed us that they had already had a part of the mill break and had replaced it by using the repair funds. I was really excited to see the “savings” account being properly utilized. Wise practices like that will ensure that the mill continues to serve the people for years to come.
