When you stand atop the Gambaga Escarpment anywhere from Namoori all the way to Nakpanduri, you can see a single hill standing alone on the flat plain to the north. I once asked veteran Dr. George Faile II about it and he told me that decades ago he took his boys there and they hiked it.

One Saturday last month we decided to do a little excursion and head that way. It involved driving from Nalerigu to Nakpanduri, then down the escarpment road, and up a horrible dirt road north to Garu, then west to the village of Kugri.

A local man we met at the base of the hill told us that some Chinese gold prospectors had recently passed through and surveyed the area. He also told us that his ancestors who first settled here met a magical dwarf atop the mountain and there is a shrine to it there.

On our way back home we stopped by the Nakpanduri “waterfall” (it’s actually a large drainage canal) and then to see our friend Ms. Denice.
