Christmas day was a busy day for the Haun family. Early in the morning we went to the Faile’s house for a wonderful breakfast of cheese omelets, bacon, and muffins. It was the bacon, the cheese, and the American muffin mixes that made it such a special breakfast. We don’t get much of those around […]
Christmas in Nalerigu (2 of 3)
We then went to First Baptist Nalerigu for their Christmas church service. Lots of singing and dancing, some really cute kids reciting Scripture (got it on video), and an extremely long sermon finally ended with the entire congregation going to the chief’s palace to greet the Nayiri (king of the Mamprusi ethnic group).
Christmas in Nalerigu (3 of 3)
After the festivities at church and the Nayiri’s palace we gathered with several missionary families at one of the hospital guest houses for lunch. A Catholic missionary couple from Nakpanduri and Pat and Peggy Ozment from Tamale joined us. Everyone brought their finest American foods. We had such gourmet and rare foods as a canned […]
Photo of the Day
In the village Christmas presents are often livestock or fowl. I snapped this photo in the hospital hallway outside the maternity ward on Christmas day. An employee had apparently been given a chicken as a gift and had strapped it to the back of the bike. Not something you see every day in the halls […]
Ultrasounds
One of the skills that I have been picking up over the past 3 months is doing ultrasounds. Most of time, it is for dating a pregnancy. Pregnancy tests are in limited supply here. If a woman wants confirmation of pregnancy, we exam her in the consultation room and send her down to the theater […]
Technical Difficulties
We’ve had issues with our internet connection the past two days and haven’t been able to post anything on the blog. We’re doing great and are wrapping up our last week here in Nalerigue. We’ll have plenty to put on the website once our internet shapes up. **sent via email by William
2007 Haun Christmas Card
In years past we’ve made videos for Christmas cards (2006, 2005, 2002) but this year we commissioned Boyz2Men, the top artist in Nalerigu to paint our card for us (more on him later). Merry Christmas to all!
Excising Lipomas (w/ slideshow)
A lipoma is a benign tumor composed of fatty tissue that accumulates just under the skin. Removal of these tumors is usually for cosmetic reasons or because they cause discomfort for the patient. Here at the BMC, lipomas are excised under local anesthetic in the minor procedure room. I have removed several from the shoulder, […]
Tell Me The Story
In the US we’ve heard the story of Christmas. Whether you are a church goer or not, you’ve heard about how baby Jesus was born in a manger in Bethlehem. You might know the full story from Sunday School. You might have heard bits and pieces from Christmas carols. The bottom line is… you’ve heard. […]
